that’s a good question! I always thought that the Peter  during Hogwarts years was a completely different character. I think he was, a bit awkward, but also nice.  He was  a friend of James, Sirius and Remus, so he couldn’t have been so unpleasant. I think he was the least intelligent  and brilliant of the three, so he was often mocked (affectionately). Probably, over the years he could no longer bear this role of “emotional punchball” .. maybe this was the reason that made him  want to betray his friends …
In conclusion, i think  that the Wormtail who betrayed the Potters wasn’t the same Wormtail of the Marauders. :)
